Confirmation Introductory Session, Pg. 7

Service Hours

Picture
Christian service is a special experience. When we serve we accomplish two very important things:
  1. We help someone who needs our help.
  2. We encounter Jesus in a unique way.
In the 25th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, there is a parable about the end of time. In the parable, Jesus says that when we serve people in need, we are actually serving him. He is present in the poor, vulnerable, and suffering members of our community in a special way. His presence calls out to us to be kind, generous, and compassionate. He calls to us from these needy people to step outside of our self-centered concerns and do something good for someone else.

Everyone needs help. Imagine what it would be like to actually be able to hear the voice of Jesus calling out to you in every person you meet. Think about that as you watch this video:

The current service requirement for Confirmation candidates is 14 hours during the preparation process. Mrs. Anne Baker will be in touch with you about service opportunities as they arise, but you may also initiate your own opportunities. Perhaps you belong to an organization that needs volunteer help. That will count. Maybe you have an elderly neighbor who needs some assistance around his/her home. That will count. Our hope is that you will make service a daily routine. We hope that when there is a need in our community, IHM parishioners will be the first to volutneer to help.

When you offer your service, think about what you might see if you were wearing the glasses like the guy in the video. At the end of the year, before you are confirmed, we'll ask you to go on our website to our Confirmation page and tell us about what you did to serve others and what kinds of messages you would have seen if you were wearing the service glasses from the video.
